"Do Nothing" at Big Sur
Four miles south of Carmel, CA is Point
Lobos, which has been described as… "the greatest meeting of land and water in
the world." The late Henry Miller called this northern gateway of Big Sur "a region where one is
always conscious of eloquent silence… the face of the earth as the Creator intended it to look."
From beaches and
mountains to cool weather, Big Sur offers all the ingredients for a relaxing escape.
Hike along
the streams in the cool,
tree lined valleys. Climb
up on the high ridges for a
spectacular view of the
coastline on the western slope and gaze into three million acres of wilderness in the Las
Padres National Forest on the eastern slope of the ridgeline.
Be sure to keep your eyes to the sky while you're here because the California Condor
reintroduction program has brought the California Condor back to Big Sur skies. The
Ventana Wilderness Society has been very successful in reintroducing the California
Condor.
The Summer months are for family activities; tubing down the Big Sur River, exploring
tide pools along the beaches, riding horses along the shoreline or possibly having a
barbecue in one of our beautiful State Parks.
Now playing in the Big Sur theater of life -
the return of the largest mammals on earth, the Blue whales, and the Humpback
whales which travel this superhighway of whale migration throughout the summer
months. This makes for spectacular viewing from the roadside turnouts. Bring your
binoculars to get up close and personal and still stay dry!
Evenings offer the opportunity to dine in restaurants from fanciful to exquisite. Relax in
lodging that ranges from rustic to luxurious. Camp out in the many well equipped
campgrounds. Luxuriate at the health spas. And of course, one of the favorite past-times
of Big Sur, "Do Nothing!"
That's right. Relax and simply take in the magnificent beauty of Big Sur. Once you are
here there is no reason to do anything more. Replenish your spirit by simply absorbing
the weepingly beautiful vistas of Big Sur. "Do Nothing" in Big Sur and leave refreshed
and rejuvenated from head to toe. Big Sur has been here for millions of years. We don't
have that luxury.
